VW Touareg/Porsche Cayenne
The Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg 4WD twins-under-the-skin are a huge hit – and not just with journalists.

We spotted the boss of Range Rover – and the new boss of Ford\'s Premier Automotive Group – going over the Cayenne in fine detail. Slamming doors and testing the seats, the pair were there for almost half an hour.

At the Cayenne next to them, some Japanese men wearing suits with tiny Nissan badges pinned to their collars were taking digital photos, from the underbody to the interior.

Porsche did the engineering, Volkswagen paid the bills. The result: the world\'s fastest 4WD (top speed: 266kmh) for one brand and an extremely formidable contender for the other.

Porsche has an order bank so long it will take two years to deliver all the cars. But while it is assured of success, Porsche is nervous about what effect the Cayenne will have on the brand\'s image.

The Touareg might not boast the same top speed but it won\'t be a slouch: its V10 turbo diesel has 750Nm of pulling power. Translation: it should be able to tow a small Australian town.

\"Porsche is nervous about what effect the Cayenne will have on the brand\'s image\" How can they say that? I donīt want them to me scared but at least they sould care a little donīt you think?

Hehe, an australian town /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif that\'s a good one. But yes, 750 Nm is a freakin sh*tload, not even the Dauer 962 has that. No porsche produtcion car has that much torque. But of course it\'s a diesel.

How many L is the VW deisel? At work we get some f350 turbo deisles that a 7.5 L, theyre massive, and can tow more than that VW, if seen people hook up their trucks with chains and pull eachother, and the f350 won.

I read that one of the engines will be a 3.2-liter V-6, the same one from the VW Golf R32.

But why so big and powerful diesel engines?? In my opinion dieser engines are econimic. For example my fatherīs astra 1.7 tdi. But a V10 diesel?! If you want power you wouldnīt buy a diesel I think.

I dont know why they are so big, i think deisel is more compustable and doesn\'t consume as much fuel as a regular engine, and it uses more air because it needs to for there to be a combustion in the cylenders because they dont have spark plugs, they use the heat from compresion. I think it is more ecoconomic to make the big engines deisel, less polution also.

Indeed, diesels are more fuel efficient, and they win hands down when it comes to torque. Diesels reach pek output far earlier than a gasoline engine, thus the torque is a lot higher.
A diesel reaches max power quickly, after maybe 2 or 3 thousands revs. A gasoline engine isn\'t close to peak power yet in that range. It\'s only starting to build it up. And the lower revs you have poeak power at, the higher your torque.
for the mathematicians: the revs/torque function (at constant power) is hyperbolic. For the people who don\'t get it: the lower the revs, the higher the torque.
So when comparing a diesel and gasoline engie with equal power (hp), the diesel will win because it has higher torque.
A V10 gas engine probably wouldn\'t have as much torque then (unless you give it 600 hp and turn it into a major gas guzzler)

Thanks for the explanation 944 guy. So maybe diesel engines are better for slow off road driving and uphill because you can just drive with very low revs while with a gasoline one you have to keep the revs higher to get enought power. And Porsche930S I was wondering if you have a high res picture of that 4S in the snow /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
