View Full Version : Value of second hand tuned Porsches.

I have a question. Do you think that it is easy to sell let\'s say a Techart GT street after 5 years ? Who will buy a second hand car of 600 HP which consumes a lot ?
How about reliability ? Because all tuners work with the margin of the motorcapacity ?
How about the looks ? For example, nobody likes an old Gemballa. Looks so outdated now.

You know what?....I would still buy a RUF CTR Yellow Bird even in 20 years! /phpBB/images/smiles/../new_smiles/nice.gif /phpBB/images/smiles/../new_smiles/laugh.gif

...but in some way you\'re right for cheap tuners but when they build such piece of art I think its value will stay high! /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif Mostly RUF\'s! /phpBB/images/smiles/../new_smiles/nice.gif

I think there\'ll always be a fan base for tuned cars. When you tune a car you\'re making an investment. It may be that not everybody will view your particular tuning as an additional value to the car but there will always be some people that will.
See the beauty of tuning is that your setting your car apart from the rest of the stock pack. You\'re essentially buying options that Porsche don\'t carry. Some people will say that once you alter something on the original car it loses its crest, but in my opinion you\'re just enhancing your porsche and thereby enhancing its value. So needless to say it is still a porsche, just with different options.
Case in point. Below techart turbo GT street sold for 129 000 USD. Its an 01 with the regular options and with ~6000 miles. (Nothing fancy like PCCB breakes etc) Now considering the mileage and the 2 years of depreciation, this car shouldnt have sold for more than 95 000 USD tops. But apparently the former owner got back every penny he spent on aftermarket conversions. To further illustrate my point I\'d like to add that I was considering buying the car for that amount as well.<font size="1" face="arial">

yes that will look outdated in 5 years, as will chrome wheels, coffee can exhausts, and several other fads, just look at the past styling to tell u what is perment and what will stay, ( some interpation required)

Doing aftermarket mods on a car is always a gamble. Techart 996 says it well. You have individualized the car and as long as it is done right hopefully you will not make your investment depreciate faster. Unfortunately, your taste may not be to everybody\'s liking and you will have to look for that special buyer who is welling to pay more for the work you have done.
I have modded Hondas, Toyotas, Lexuses and GM vehicles and I have never gotten back what I put into them. Lots of people liked them and took pictures of them and drove them, but when they heard how much the mods cost you could tell they were surprised.
Just look at classic car auctions. What sells for the most is usually that which is left original, and even better with all the original parts. Unless your modded vehicle becomes a classic, sought after piece you had better use caution.
Many of the aftermarket companies for Porsche vehicles design impressive looking and performing cars. If you have the cash it is an option which is almost impossible to resist.

Yah techart 996, #2 and #3 is all me. I got banned by 944 guy couple of times but I decided to stay. By the way those wheels on the GT XL arent chromed, they\'re polished I believe. But even so, chromed wheels have been around for decades. Selling a tuned Honda is a bit different than selling a tuned Porsche. I think you know why. If I look at previous modified 993s which certainly are 5 years old, they dont look outdated. There\'s plenty of pics of 993 RUFs and Gemballas posted that still get ohhhhs and ahhhhhs. And I know of plenty of people that have been and still are willing to buy preowned, tuned cars. But I guess it all boils down to what your own preference is, and some people like me (and I\'m not alone) are willing to shell out the cash for it. We just dont pay the full price.

Lol thanks for puking on my car. Well what can I say? We all have different tastes. But when I take my car out people stare and turn around and ask who the tuner is. Complements come everywhere I drive it. Ive even had dealers ask me to trade it in. I doubt the elise gets the same attention. Regardless you dont have to drive it Mouse. I do and I like it. And when I eventually sell it I\'m pretty sure Ill get my investment back. I\'ve already gotten an offer for $ 55 K from a friend of mine. Thats well over blue book. And when I get my turbo, Ill promtly slapp that techart XL kit on and have the coolest looking 996 turbo in LA. Put ure elise next to it and see if people will even look at it.

Hmmm i was just eyeing the forums pics of past 911\'s and I\'ve come to the realization that the auto industry isnt too different from the fashion industry. Everything runs in cycles, but every so often, something innovative comes along and becomes the standard and after that it becomes a classic. But then again I might be wrong about the Techart XL being innovative and you might be the reincarnation of the Oracle of Delphi. Truth is, unless you really are, you dont know what will be hot in 5 years and what wont. Look at the 70s 911s. Porsches following generations of 911s have many new features which stuck and stayed. I think that you are overly conservative. Otherwise you wouldnt be driving a 1975 911, but if you opened up your mind and eyes you might be able to appreciate the elegant aggressiveness in the techart styling. By the way I actually like your car, I just dont like the way you think about younger generation porsches and their modifications. But such is life, the geriatric and the young will never understand eachother.

techart.... i agree my car needs some mods done on the outside to give it a little something..and i have done so...nothing extreme...however i really like the techart street, i myself feel that huge front spoilers with edgy lines will not pass the test of time...gemballa found that out with side venting, and i think porsche is going to back step from so many edges and go back to they slightly rounded stuff...it doesn;t age the same...mind u after all that...your car is very up to date in its styling, and i am sure would attract many more ohhhhs and ahhhhs than my car would (accept for engine sounds) and there is no comparsion in car abilites either...mine wins..

I also agree but it depends on the car. The older 911\'s just looked big bad n bulky. The 996 is too smooth a car to put something like that on there. Maybe if the 997 turns out to be a wide ass bulky mofo it might look good.

Its true about the old gemballas not being worth much, if one looks on ebay teh old avalanches and cyrrus' go for peanuts considering how much tehy cost at the time (circa $250,000), but this also probably reflects buy how much teh comapnies ripped off teh customers first time around!
just liek teh porsche flatnose official option being 40,000£ or what ever ridiculous price it was
however modern techarts, gemballas etc are no way near as extreme from teh original porsche models they are based on in terms of wings etc, so there is less to date quickly on them, all good, and teh y make interesting second hand buyts
modern tech and gems are easier, for instance where would one get a new camera or matching monitor for a 1986 gemballa avalanche now? they prob have not been made for 10 years
